Next Generation is a residency programme which ASSITEJ (International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People) launched in 2008 and has continued since then. There have been two version of it: some of them have been held at international theatre for young audiences festivals, such as ASSITEJ’s World Congresses and Artistic Gatherings, and the others at local TYA festivals. In Japan, the first Next Generation took place at Kijimuna Festa (called as ricca ricca*festa now) in 2012.
The aim of the Next Generation is to promote international exchange among young and emergent artists, producers, critics, and researchers under the age of 36 who work in the field of theatre for child and young audiences, and to nurture the ‘next-generation international artists’ who can work internationally. During the festival, they watch plays, attend symposiums and seminars, participate in workshops together, and learn about the history and current situation of theatre for young audiences in the world. At the same time, they write a manifesto or create an experimental performance together in order to find a form of theatre or a way to work together of their generation.
This time, the programme will be divided into two days: the first day will focus on European participants, and the second day will focus on Asian participants. In the first half of each day’s programme, young and emergent artists will introduce themselves to each other and discuss a specific theme. In the second half of the programme, all the participants who gathered that day will participant in a workshop. Why don’t you join us and enjoy new encounters and also think about the future of TYA in the world?
